Summer Vibes – Welcome to 2021!

Summer Vibes – Welcome to 2021!

We hope everyone has enjoyed a sunshine laden holiday! The fruit and vegetables are stunning this year thanks to the plentiful sunshine and even a few good inundations of rain – and now our plates are full of the bounty of the luscious stone fruit season. I’ve been making fruit tarts with the amazing crops, and we recently polished off a rustic onion tart prepared with a delicious olive oil pastry that included a good dose of dried oregano and rosemary from the garden (recipe below). Eating the produce from our own garden is a really special treat!

Another excitement for us in 2021 is the culinary adventure ahead for Scarecrow with our new Head Chef, Steve Perlstein. Check out more about Steve in this newsletter. Sneak preview: latkes are coming onto the menu!

Part of the Scarecrow summer closure always includes site maintenance, this year that included the Kauri floors being sanded and polished…and the tiled areas re-sealed too. A few more jobs still lurking on the ‘to do’ list, but we are grateful for the time to get these important things done, thanks for your patience waiting for us to re-open!

What a privilege to enjoy freedom in our beautiful country and be with family, friends and community in this unique time. I have to pinch myself when we listen to the grim news from elsewhere in the world, knowing how very tough the struggle ahead is for billions of people. A tremendous job Team NZ has done thus far: a testament to the power and principles of putting the community first and embracing ‘living local’. We are happy to be welcoming so many of you already back to our local Scarecrow community after your days of leisure!

Wishing everyone a fulfilling and healthy 2021.
Alison

Welcoming our new Head Chef

Steve Perlstein has been a chef for 19 years, most of that in the US, where he and his wife owned a restaurant and food truck and he headed several kitchens ranging from fine dining to Southern Barbecue, as well as a ready meals business. Before becoming a chef, Steve was a writer and publisher, and he’s the author of two books. He and his wife Jennifer moved to New Zealand two years ago where he’s enjoyed discovering Kiwi food and exploring the country. Steve and Jennifer have two grown children who still live in the US. With Steve onboard, we’re extra excited about 2021!
