Many years living in Paris exposed Alison Dyson to a new façon de vivre. With the local butcher, boulangerie, café, florist and produce market all within a stone’s throw of their central Parisian apartment, Alison gained a new and authentic perspective on what it means to live locally and truly become part of a community. To know the vendors, and the vendors in turn know you and your family, your favourite loaves and cuts of meat, where your fresh daily milk and wedge of cheese comes from; your husband’s birthday, or menu for the dinner party you’re hosting later in the week.
In 2014, when Alison and her husband Paul moved from the suburbs into Auckland’s CBD, they struggled to find a stockist of the fresh foods they wanted daily; things like quality fresh breads, organic coffee, artisan cheeses, fresh olive oils, organic produce and more. With a distinct lack of options available, they established Scarecrow; a warm & welcoming place for city dwellers to get their ‘local’ fix, offering quality, artisan products at affordable prices.
Since then Scarecrow Kitchen, Florist and Grocer has become an urban oasis and local favourite in the heart of the city. The opening of Scarecrow Grocer at 811 Mt Eden Road is the next exciting step in the Scarecrow journey; building on Alison’s vision to bring local growers & artisan suppliers to Auckland city dwellers; to enhance community living.
In March 2020, the forced shutdown not only threatened so many businesses like Scarecrow, but it also offered time & headspace to think about strengthening and diversifying the business. More than ever buying locally became significant; in fact the only option. Scarecrow’s founding principle was to support the idea of living locally, buying locally & supporting local artisan producers. During the country’s first lockdown, the seed of Scarecrow Grocer was planted. Scarecrow is a beautiful café/kitchen, florist & artisan grocer in the heart of the city; what if a version of it were to be replicated in the suburbs? Alison is passionate about good food and quality. Her commitment to building community relationships & supporting local; sourcing artisanal & organic grocery items from small producers and striving to lessen their environmental footprint underpins her every decision. The Scarecrow brand is these values personified.
Scarecrow Grocer is an artisan grocer located at 811 Mt Eden Road, nestled between Wild Wheat and Ivy & Bean café in the Tramstop building. The store stocks New Zealand made artisan foods, house-made ready meals and deli goods, NZ wines and craft beers and an extensive range of organic products, complemented by a selection of quality imported goods. Bouquets of fresh flowers from Scarecrow’s in-house florist line the shop frontage and are peppered throughout the store. The team works with local and seasonal market fresh flowers making up fresh daily bouquets you can pick up in store or purchase online for delivery. If you have a special function coming up, at home or in a venue, the florists are there to assist with making it extra special with flowers to suit. A range of gift baskets is available in store or online for delivery. Scarecrow Grocer is a great place to find affordable everyday items you’ll be hard-pressed to find anywhere else.
Scarecrow Grocer’s house-made ready meals include family-sized pies (try the chicken & porcini or Moroccan lamb shank), lasagne stacks and vegan meals. These nutritious and delicious meals are designed to take the pressure off busy mealtimes, and are easily reheated at home. They are made with fresh, unadulterated ingredients, then vacuum-packed to seal in freshness, and can easily be put into the freezer for the ultimate in convenience. There is a range of delectable deli goods such as house-cured duck breast prosciutto and Gravlax, all freshly made by the team of chefs in the Scarecrow city kitchen.
Alongside house-made foods and boutique cellar offerings, Scarecrow Grocer stocks wide-ranging grocery staples, including organic eggs, dairy (come just for the cheese selection!), meats and produce; artisan honeys, olive oils, cereals, NZ craft chocolates, snacks, organic fair-trade coffee and specialist teas; sustainable homewares and personal care items.
We’re loving the synergy at 811 Mt Eden Road. As the newest member of the Tramstop family, Scarecrow Grocer is the perfect addition.
