As a child I went through a phase when I was fascinated, indeed captivated, by the wee ‘Love Is’ cartoon characters of the 1960’s and ’70’s created by NZ cartoonist Kim Casali. At school we dreamt up our perfect love. We embellished the cartoon with an excess of childish love icons and our own simple phrases. But we were truly missing the detail!
Now, in a quirky way I am thinking about love as an action to embrace our community and our planet.
There has been a lot of love in our family recently, particularly at the recent nuptials of our daughter. Instead of gifts the couple asked guests to plant trees in their honour. We have kowhai seed pods leftover which we would love to gift to you with your Valentine’s gifts. Please let us know if you’d like to share one of these with someone you know (while stocks last).
So, let’s make this Valentine’s Day about something more and think about Love in its fullest sense. How can we do a loving kindness for a new immigrant, a friend, a neighbour; how can we appreciate our partners and loved ones and express this thoughtfully?

Our new summer menu
In other good news, today we launch our brand new Summer 2021 menu, packed with old favourites & what are sure to become new. For the first time, this menu incorporates wines from our very own Scarecrow Cellar (which you’ll find online or at Scarecrow Grocer, 811 Mt Eden Road). These have been carefully selected from local independent wineries across NZ, many of which are natural, vegan, organic and biodynamic. Provenance, method and connection have played a crucial part in the wines we have chosen, and we are sure you will appreciate what are some of the very best NZ wineries have to offer.
