Celebrating Success in our Vibrant City

Celebrating Success in our Vibrant City

Lately I’ve been thinking about education and about life in our city. For me, these two things are intrinsically related and are critical to the development of central Auckland. I’m particularly thinking about this as the latest Auckland University graduates celebrate this week and, at the same time, businesses, residents and the people of Auckland are debating the future of the inner city.

My children started school in central Paris, just a short walk from our apartment. After school we would spend time in one of the many local parks. We met with friends, new neighbours, chatted with dog walkers and others enjoying time in the parks.

Living in central Paris for many years I didn’t need a car. We accessed everything on foot, bicycle or by public transport, on rare occasions by taxi. Core to our experience of living in the centre of a big city was easy access to everything in our neighbourhood, including schooling.

Auckland’s educational institutions are important cornerstones of the city. They bring intellectual vibrancy, young people to reside in the city and significant economic benefit to city businesses. Close to these major educational institutions are some of our key cultural establishments such as the city library, museum and art gallery; a great synergy.

However, Auckland is missing other educational institutions in the central city. With a growing residential population, central Auckland needs primary, intermediate and high schools. The city requires more parks and other facilities related to the needs of children and their families, thus supporting all age groups to live well in the city.  Imagine the impact on safety in our city, the economic vitality, the cultural diversity and the sustainability of Auckland central with an intergenerational community living in the city precinct.

Bring in families to live in the city centre, support their needs and watch Auckland central flourish. A low impact, environmentally friendly way to live well in a vibrant Auckland. We are so lucky to live in a beautiful city, its heart nestled on a wonderful harbour, a perfect place for families to flourish and build connected and successful inner city communities.

This week we celebrate graduates from the University of Auckland. We know many of them, as customers, as our staff members and as friends. Congratulations to you all!!
